Kurgyis András

András Kurgyis began playing the violin at the age of five with Zsoltné Szesztay at the Simonffy Emil Music School in Debrecen. From 2008, he continued his studies at the SZTE Vántus István Secondary School of Music, graduating as a student of Márta S. Dobos.
He won first prize and a special prize at the Alma Cornea Ionescu Euroregional Music Competition in Timișoara in 2009, while in 2010 he was awarded first prize and in 2011 second prize.
In 2012, he was admitted to the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music in Budapest, where he completed his BA studies under Géza Kapás, Zsófia Környei, and Katalin Kokas. From 2016, he continued his studies in the viola MA program at the Academy of Music in Péter Bársony's class, while also attending masterclasses with Maxim Rysanov, Ettore Causa, Nobuko Imai, Michael Gieler, and James Boyd. His viola diploma concert took place on March 20, 2018, and his viola DLA doctoral complex exam on September 16, 2020, at the Liszt Academy.
Since the summer of 2015, he has been the violist of the Kruppa String Quartet, with which he won second prize at the 2016 Leó Weiner National Chamber Music Competition. In September 2016, as a member of the quartet, he participated in the master classes of Barnabás Kelemen and László Fenyő in Aldeburgh, England. In the same year, he performed with the string quartet at the Mini-Festival organized by Café Budapest, as well as at the Auer Violin Festival in Veszprém and at the Palace of Arts as part of the Rising Stars series.
In 2022, he became a member of the Korossy Quartet. Later that year, the quartet was accepted into the Reina Sofía School of Music in Madrid, where they were able to further develop their skills under Günter Pichler, the legendary first violinist of the Alban Berg Quartet.
In addition to his solo and chamber music activities, he is an orchestral artist and viola section leader at the Hungarian Opera House.
