Baroque and contemporary works confront each other with an unusual dramaturgy: two movements of Ádám Kondor's pseudo-baroque, "canonic fugue" are set between movements of Bach's cello suite. The aim of the experiment is to challenge and disabuse us of our preconceptions about both contemporary and classical music. The double reading inevitably creates a link and a harmony between works written three hundred years apart. The spotlight is on the listener: what do we hear, how do we listen, do we understand or want to understand what the music is saying?
Kinga Gáborjáni Szabó is the principal cellist of the Constellation Orchestra under Sir John Eliot Gardiner. For ten years she was principal soloist with the English Touring Opera and has served as invited principal soloist with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and the English Concert, among others. She has also appeared as a soloist with the modern cello in concerts at the Barbican Theatre.
